Titi / Muttonbird Islands

The Titi Islands or Muttonbird Islands, officially Titi / Muttonbird Islands is the name given to five non- directly connected groups of islands near Iceland Stewart / Rakiura in the extreme south of New Zealand. Administratively, they belong to the region of Southland.

The northeastern group lies in the Foveaux Strait northeast of Stewart Iceland, between this island and Ruapuke Iceland. A small group in the east, south of the Eastern Cape of Stewart Iceland is also called Breaksea Islands. In the southwest of Iceland Stewart is close to the coast of the Boat Group. A little further west Mokiti / Little Moggy Iceland and Mokinui / Big Moggy Iceland. More about eight kilometers south there is another group of islands around Taukihepa / Big South Cape Iceland. Also some other islands south and east of Stewart Iceland are sometimes counted among the Muttonbird Islands.

The islands are not permanently inhabited. They got their name because of the traditional harvesting of Shearwaters ( māori Titi, English: Muttonbird ) by the Māori April 1 to May 31 The right to harvest the shearwater chick is - with few exceptions - reserved by law to the Rakiura Māori.

In May 2006, the fishing boat Kotuku capsized near Womens Iceland, while six people were killed.
