History

First documented records from the year 1050 can be found in the monastery of All Saints in Schaffhausen, where the name is mentioned Titinsee. Even the name Dettesee is mentioned in a document from the parish Saig, which dates from the year 1111. Around since 1750, the name is used in its present form.

About the origin of the name, there are several theories: After the Roman general Titus is said to have stored around the Titisee. Here, the lake it seems to have so much that he gave him his name. This is also the reason why today the rough replica of a Roman galley on the Titisee wrong. According to another theory, a Mr. Titini to have hunted in the 12th century in the area around the lake. Also, the arum, formerly known in the region as Tittele, comes as a name in question, even if it does not happen again at Titisee today.

After taking a hill at the outflow of Gutach from the Titisee two sarcophagi were found from worked tuff in 1840, assumed the archaeologist Andreas Haasis -Berner in an essay published in 2011, that they must come from the period between 700 and 900. Previously it had been thought the Black Forest for the first millennium as uninhabited.

Icing

The Titisee takes a long time until it freezes in winter. This is due to the winds, which almost always keep the water surface in motion. Thus, the ice is released to enter the thickness of the ice core must be at least 16 cm ( Kerneis, also called Kompakteis, is stable and contains almost no air bubbles).

Is there prospect of release, measurements are carried out through the yard of the town of Titisee -Neustadt to three to four measuring points daily. If a release is possible and responsible have been approved, certain defined areas of the lake are released, but never the whole lake.

This scheme was introduced after a previous accident had happened: At that time, the lake was used as an airstrip for flight days. To overcome these, a tractor was used to plow snow. The tractor broke out on January 14, 1966 through the ice and sank along with the Bühlhofbauer Walter Wild (29 ) in the lake. The body was found two weeks later.
