Titus Burckhardt

Titus Burckhardt ( born October 24, 1908 in Florence, † January 15, 1984 in Lausanne) was a Swiss Sufiforscher and representatives of the philosophia perennis.

Life

Titus Burckhardt, son of the sculptor Carl, Burckhardt (1878-1923), studied art history and Oriental Studies at the University of Basel, without finishing. He worked first as a draftsman, then as a publisher and writer.

In 1972 he was awarded by UNESCO to preserve the order of the cityscape of Fez. As an author, he submitted writings on the cultural history of medieval Europe and Islam, especially Sufism and alchemy. He also translated some French and Arabic works.
