Tiverton is a town ( Town) in Newport County of the U.S. state of Rhode Iceland in the United States. Tiverton is also the birthplace of the 1755 -born sailor and the first American Robert Gray sailed around the globe.

Geography

Tiverton is located on the northeastern shore of Narragansett Bay. The metropolitan area is cut off by land as the city located south of Tiverton Little Compton Rhode Iceland from the rest, and thus connected only via the Sakonnet Bridge with the city of Portsmouth on the island of Rhode Iceland and the rest of the state. Just north of the city, the limit is for the state of Massachusetts, beyond which the city of Fall River is the main center for Tiverton.

The town of Tiverton and the north upstream district of North Tiverton are on a long granite ridge, which reaches a height of up to 75 m above sea level. Population

History

Tiverton was originally since 1694 part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. After a long dispute between Rhode Iceland and Massachusetts the urban area was 1746 slammed on decree of the king together with Cumberland, Barrington, Bristol and Little Compton, Rhode Iceland said. The city was founded in 1747.

The city was designed originally for agriculture, other industries were fishing and shipbuilding. 1827 were cotton and woolen mills added as a source of income. Until the early 20th century, also the production of menhaden fish oil was the main source of income of the urban population.

Today, especially commercial enterprises have settled in the city. Summer tourism has grown in importance, as its function as a residential area.
