Tiwai Point

Tiwai Point is a headland in the south of the South Island of New Zealand at the entrance to the natural harbor of bluff. It extends from the western end of the Awarua Plain between the Awarua Bay to the north and Foveaux Strait in the south west.

Aluminum smelter

On the peninsula of Tiwai Point is aluminum smelter, an aluminum smelter, which is one of the largest industrial sites in New Zealand. The lodge opened in 1971 is among the 20 largest aluminum smelters in the world.

The smelter and the power plant Manapouri were built as a joint project to cover the power consumption of up to 610 MW. The plant is the largest energy consumer in the South Island and consumes a third of the energy of the South Island and 15 % of the energy of New Zealand.
