Tjerk Westerterp

Theodorus Engelbertus " Tjerk " Westerterp ( born December 2, 1930 in Rotterdam ) is a former Dutch politician ( KVP, CDA, Leefbar Nederland) and journalist. He was a member of the Dutch House of Commons and the European Parliament as well as transport minister in the cabinet of Joop den Uyl.

Life

Westerterp studied until 1949 Political and Social Sciences and then to 1951 Journalism at the University of Nijmegen. During this time (1949-1953) he was also a journalist with the newspaper De Stem and correspondent for De Maas Bode. Following this, Westerterp was 1953-1963 Officials for the recently entered into force in European Coal and Steel Community.

1963 Westerterp was for the Katholieke Volkspartij ( CIP), a deputy in the Dutch lower house and remained there with a one-year interruption in the years 1971/72 by the year 1973. During his parliamentary time he dealt mainly with foreign issues (European cooperation and development aid ), trade policy, nuclear energy and concerns of the kingdom. Westerterp 1966 agreed with his group against the Prime Minister Jo Cals (CIP) budget proposal carried along and made so unintentionally (after assertion of the Group ) for his resignation. From December 1972 to May 1973, he was Vice - Chairman of the Group. In the years 1967-1971 Westerterp was also a deputy in the European Parliament, the last year he held the vice presidency there. Furthermore, Westerterp was in the years 1971-1973 State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and there again responsible for European cooperation.

1973 Westerterp was den Uyl (PvdA ) minister. During his tenure, he advocated for an improved spatial planning and the promotion of public transport. Furthermore, let Westerterp exacerbate alcohol tests in traffic and 1974 introduce the blowing tests. In 1975, he led the seat belt for car and helmet use for motorcyclists. Before December 1977 ended his term in office, he returned in June of that year as a deputy to parliament back, then left, however, in early 1978, the active politics and became director of US-based Amsterdam European Options Exchange, which he held until his retirement in 1993.

Westerterp 2002, joined the party Leefbar Nederland and ran for the parliamentary elections of that year, but could not win a seat. He then left the party again.
