Tobias Michael

Michael Tobias (* June 13, 1592 in Dresden, † June 26, 1657 in Leipzig ) was a German composer and choirmaster.

The son of the Franco-Flemish composer Rogier Michael (1552-1619) and brother of the organist Christian Rogier (c. 1593-1637 ) and Samuel (around 1597-1632 ) was since 1601 the chapel choir at the Dresden court. After he attended from 1609 Schulpforta, Tobias Michael studied in Leipzig and Wittenberg theology. 1619, he was the bandmaster of the princes of Schwarzburg- Sondershausen in the Holy Trinity Church in Sondershausen. After a devastating fire in 1621, in which the church was completely destroyed, Michael got a job as town clerk.

1631 he was appointed as successor of Johann Hermann Schein Thomas cantor of the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. His successor dortiger 1657 Sebastian weavers.

By Michael two volumes of motets and sacred concertos (1634-1637) as well as six-to eight-part occasional works (mostly concertante motets to weddings and funerals ) are under the title "Musical Seelenlust " survived. The style that corresponded to the time in Germany's widespread Venetian school.

The motet for his own funeral composed Tobias Michael several years before his death.
