Toboggan

A toboggan is a sled -free slide of the North American Indians of the Subarctic, in particular the Cree and Innu in Canada. The word toboggan comes from the language of the Mi'kmaq. The toboggan is made of birch wood, is a means of transport and is pulled by dogs or humans.

The Innu finished the toboggan of one or more thin birch planks that are connected with leather straps. There is a toboggan in different widths, the narrowest is about 30 cm wide, 1.80 m long and bent up at the front. On the top it is often covered with leather. The toboggan was previously used mainly for transporting traps, hunting equipment and dead game, where the Indians became detached when pulled. The white settlers took over this practical vehicle. The Canadians are using it as a winter sports equipment.

Since 1906 located at the Munich Oktoberfest a toboggan ride called. In this slide the visitors after they have been transported via a steep and high-speed moving walkway up with toboggan -like carpets down a slide.
