Tocumen

Tocumen is a town in the Central American Republic of Panama. Here is the international airport, which is connected by a highway with the city.

Tocumen is to Panama City and San Miguelito, the third largest city in the country. Its population is 98 690 (2008).

The city is located near the Gulf of Panama in the coastal plain about 20 km northeast of the capital on the road from Panama City and San Miguelito by Chepo. Construction of the airport in 1947 contributed to the development of the hitherto rather insignificant place; the current terminal dates from the year 1978. On 2 July 2004, there were at the airport to a plane crash that claimed six lives.

Despite the industrial areas around the airport Panama City is still characterized by widespread poverty, so it is one of the most typical for Latin America, densely populated suburban slum settlements in Tocumen. The crime rate is higher than average in this zona roja.
