Tofilau Eti Alesana

Tofilau Eti Alesana Aualamalefalelima ( born June 4, 1924 in Vaitogi Tutuila American Samoa, † March 19, 1999 in Apia, Samoa) was a politician and twice Prime Minister of Samoa.

Political career and party founder

Alesana was awarded the title of a chief ( Va'aelua ) because of his exemplary leadership of a Koprafarm 1947. Ten years later he became a member of the Legislative Council and in 1958 Minister of Health. Between 1958 and 1960 he was a member of the Constitutional Committee and later a signatory to the Convention on 1 January 1962 emerged the Independent State of Western Samoa from the.

1979 Alesana was with Va'ai Kolone co-founder of the Human Rights Protection Party ( HRPP ) and thus the first political party in Samoa. The purpose of the foundation was to overthrow the Prime Minister Tupuola Taisi Tufuga Efi. This was initially only a short time after the election of 1982. After the HRPP had rejected the budget and Efi was so incapacitated, Alesana was first elected to succeed Efi on 31 December 1982 as prime minister. Since 1984, he also served as foreign minister. On December 30, 1985, he was voted out, however, by a proposed no-confidence vote from his own party and replaced by Kolone as Prime Minister. Background deselection was the failure to take account of some HRPP members in the Cabinet.

Term of office from 1988 to 1998 and resignation

On April 8, 1988, he was awarded with the HRPP again the majority in Parliament ( Fono ) and was again in place of Kolone Prime Minister. At the same time he was again Secretary of State.

The guided by Alesana HRPP subsequently lost none of the parliamentary elections more and eventually he built the majority of the HRPP in the Fono to a two -thirds majority of. Alesana was by the absolute majority in parliament to introduce universal suffrage, and thus replaced the traditional exclusive right to vote of the chiefs ( matai ). However, Alesana kept an iron grip on his power and handed the premiership after a long illness on November 23, 1998 Deputy Prime Minister Sailele Tuila'epa Malielegaoi.
