Togakushi Shrine

The Togakushi Shrine (Japanese戸 隠 神社, Togakushi -jinja ) is a Shinto shrine in the village, now part of Nagano Togakushi in Japan. It is located in the wooded mountains Togakushi which were considered sacred since time immemorial.

It consists of three individual shrines, in which the three Kami Ame -no- tajikara, Omoikane and Ame -no- uhaharu be worshiped:

  • Hōkōsha (宝光 社, lower shrine )
  • Chūsha (中 社, medium Shrine )
  • Okusha (奥 社, upper shrine )

The shrine is connected to the Ama Kami no Iwato.

The way to Okusha leads through an avenue about 900 year-old Japanese cedar by a torii.

On the way to the shrine there is a number of restaurants offering the famous Japanese soba noodles from Togakushi. The shrine is also known for its Kagura, ceremonial dances, which will look back at 1,300 years of tradition here.

The shrine is a popular tourist attraction and can be reached in an hour from Nagano by bus.
