Togolese parliamentary election, 2013

The parliamentary elections in Togo were held on 25 July 2013.

The elections should have originally held in October 2012, but had to because of protests are first moved to March 24, 2013, then on July 21, and finally on the 25th of July 2013.

Electoral system

Were elected the 91 members of the National Assembly, the Togolese Parliament. Previously belonged to this 81 people.

For the elections, the country was divided into 30 electoral districts. Each district were to between two and ten seats. Overall, 1174 Togolese applied for a seat in parliament, among them were 159 women and 31 former parliamentarians.

Background

The elections had to be repeatedly postponed because the opposition parties called for electoral reforms. In July, the government made ​​some concessions and dismissed ten opposition from prison, which were detained in January for arson on two markets. In addition, the opposition was allowed to make some representatives of the Electoral Commission and at the polling stations and got financial support for the campaign. Fundamental reforms failed to materialize, however. Prior to the elections, it also came to street protests, vorgingen against which the security forces with tear gas.

The ballot expired without incident. According to observers of the African Union and ECOWAS, the elections were fair. The opposition party CST claims but, whether irregularities occurred.

Result

The ruling party won the elections UNIR significantly. According to the provisional results, the party should have won 62 of 91 seats to President Faure Gnassingbe. Especially in the north of the country she could get very many votes. The coalition CST opposition leader Jean- Pierre Fabre came up with 19 seats. She received a lot of support from the capital Lome, where she was able to secure seven of the ten seats. The former opposition party to Gilchrist Olympio can reformulate only three deputies.
