Toirano

Toirano is a small town with 2708 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Savona on the Ligurian coast.

The Grotte di Toirano

It is known Toirano for the Grotte di Toirano. This cave system is located in a barren region at the end of the Vallone del Vero, about 7 km from the coast. In the solid there are about 70 caves.

The cave is explored since 1890, opened in 1953 as a show cave, one of the main tourist attractions in the hinterland of the Riviera di Ponente. Each year more than 100,000 visitors. Accessible are the Grotta della Basura connected and Grotta di San Lucia Inferiore. Allegedly 12,000 years old traces of " primitive man " and cave bear, in addition to huge stalactites of the cave attractions.

After the output is on the way back to the rock face an ancient chapel, called santuario rupestre, which can also be visited. In it there is an access to another cave - Grotta di San Lucia Superiore. The Grotta del Colombo, were found in the bone fragments of Homo heidelbergensis, is accessible only for scientific purposes. In the village there is the Museum Ethnographic Museum della Val Varatella are shown in the finds from the caves.
