Tokat (Armenian Եւդոկիա / Ewdokia ) is the capital of the Turkish province of Tokat. The city has 124 496 inhabitants (2008 ) and lies between Sivas and Niksar in the valley of Yeşilırmak.

History

Tokat, the ancient Eudoxia, is an Anatolian city with a long history, starting with the Hittites in the 2nd millennium BC However, it played no major role in ancient times, was important only his fortress Dazimon. More significant was the neighboring Comana pontica. Against 1021 Senekerim Arzruni received from Sebaste Tokat as a fief of the Byzantine Emperor. The Armenian Arzruniden had fled the Seljuks westward. 1045 Tokat went by marriage to the dynasty of Armenian Bagratides. From 1071 to 1175 the Turkmen ruled Danishmends. From the 11th to the 13th century the trade in Tokat flourished. 1396 the Turkmen emirate Tokat was Ottoman. The Jesuits maintained a Armenian Catholic College and the Armenian Sisters of the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception is a convent. In the 17th century Evliya Çelebi compared the prosperity of Tokat with Bursa and Aleppo. In the 19th century Tokat was one of the largest cities in Asiatic Turkey. In 1854 there was a greater Armenian Protestant community. American Protestant missions originated from 1864. The gradual political and economic decline began with the simultaneous rise of the neighboring city of Sivas. On 1 May 1914, the main business street of Tokat victims of a fire was. On 9 May 1915, the Armenians were deported from the city. Until the 20th century, many inhabitants emigrated to America or Europe.
