Tolland County, Connecticut

Tolland County is a county located in the state of Connecticut in the United States with 136,364 inhabitants. The largest city of the county is Vernon. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Tolland.

Geography

The county has an area of 1080 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hartford County, New London County, Windham County, and Hampden County, and Worcester County ( Massachusetts).

History

Tolland County was formed in 1785 from parts of Hartford County and Windham County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 136,364 people in the county. There were 49 431 households and 34 156 families. The population density was 128 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 92.34 percent White, 2.72 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 2.27 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.08 percent from other races groups; 2.84 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 49 431 households out of which 33.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers. 30.9 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households and 7.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.03.

Based on the county the population was spread from 23.1 percent population under 18 years, 12.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 59,044, and the median income for a family was $ 70,856. Males have a median income of $ 46,619, women $ 34,255. The per capita income was $ 25,474. 5.6 percent of the population and 2.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. Among them were 4.6 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 5.2 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
