Tollense

The Tollense

The Tollense ( slaw dolenzia = Talniederung, dol or dolina = valley ) is a river in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It originates from the Tollensee and ends at the town of Demmin in the Peene, the most important right tributary it is. It flows partly quite tortuous, partly channeled through a wide glacial valley about two kilometers with distinctive, high bank slopes and terraces. On its total length of 68 kilometers, it has a gradient of 13 meters. The Tollense is a narrow river and because of several built-in defense levels not navigable.

River

Initially, the river is divided into the partially channeled oil mill creek and the scale as a channel upper or lower stream. The waterways connect approximately 1.6 kilometers downstream to Tollense. Just north of Neubrandenburg located on both sides of the Tollense several Torflöcher. These are flooded, superficial former Torfabbaugebiete. Today, the artificially created ponds are partially used fishing economically.

In the area of Torflöcher the Tollense takes place only partly channeled thereafter until about a kilometer after the Datzeeinmündung, completely in a channel bed.

Five kilometers from Tollensee ( initial oil mill creek ) runs the river strongly meandering north up to the level of the village Neddemin. In this way it flows through the Birkbuschwiesen, a 132.5 hectare nature reserve with FFH status. Here there are again abandoned and flooded peat. The valley floor on both sides of the Tollense is partially verschilft and verbuscht. A copse joins on the right side of the river.

Behind the Neddemin Tollense is on the left side right side divided in a natural, highly meandering stream into a channel and runs and so to the town of Old Treptow. The river is lined on this stretch of fields and grassland. Near the river, there are few groups of trees, however, the natural course of the river of black alder and other soft deciduous trees lined.

Behind Altentreptow both streams are reunited. The river valley is narrow from here for a longer portion. The Tollense meanders now strong again. The lower valley sections are used here as grassland. The terrace slopes of the valley current are partially wooded.

On reaching the village Klempenow the Great Landgraben opens into the Tollense. The river now changes direction and flows to the northwest. He uses here from an old broad glacial valley for his run. The high and sometimes steep hillside terraces are now reset far. The valley floor is used as grassland and only at isolated points in the wetter riparian zone come before small groups of trees. The Tollense flowing again channeled, but not straight, but writhing in large sheets by the broad valley.

After the confluence of the Augrabens in the Tollense it flows past the southern outskirts of Demmin and ends in front of the city in the Peene.

Finds from the Bronze Age

North of Old Treptow, near the early medieval ( datable because of the wall remains) castle with the Slavic name Conerow, since the 1990s, were on slopes and found human bones in the river bed, which often show traces of violence, such as skull holes or remaining arrowheads. Over a distance of 300 meters river hid archaeologists from the University of Greifswald been bone that may be currently more than 100 individuals assigned. Man, however, the total number of fatalities estimates higher and the suspected - not found - place of battle upstream of the historic river and changed course today. In the up to three meters thick layers of peat, the human remains were well preserved.

Water

From the Neubrandenburg Tollense can be navigated with small boats ( canoes, Canadians, rowing boats ). With several weirs and obstructions ( riprap, low bridges and so-called herb barriers) must be converted to wear during the 68- kilometer boat ride. It is advisable to go further on the edge of the channel height from Tollense Neddemin to Altentreptow. Only here and there are to be expected in the upper reaches of the Tollense with a higher flow rate.
