Tolox

Tolox is a municipality in the province of Málaga ( Spain), located in the Sierra de las Nieves.

History

Tolox is of Phoenician origin and was subsequently conquered by the Romans. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the short interregnum of the Visigoths began. With the conquest of Andalusia by the Moors from 711 AD Tolox came under Moorish rule. In the year 883 AD, Umar ibn Hafsun conquered the city and developed it into one of his main points of the Serrania de Ronda. Abd ar -Rahman III. succeeded only 921 retake the city of Umar ibn Hafsuns son Suleiman. Abd ar -Rahman III. could then destroy the castle and the Alcazar.

1485 Tolox was recaptured during the Reconquista by the Christians. The Moorish population was henceforth forced to recognize the political, social and cultural supremacy of Christians.

In 1539 there were, according to legend riots between Christians and Moors. The memories of this conflict is kept alive every year during the carnival time through the fixed " Dia de los Polvos " (Day of the dust ).

1571 there was a rebellion of the Moors in the Serrania de Ronda and in the Alpujarras, which affected Tolox. After this Tolox seemed to be largely depopulated, so that Philip II ordered the resettlement of Christians from Galicia, Seville and Cordoba.
