Tolui

Tolui Khan, also Touli or Tuli ( Mongolian Толуй; Chinese拖雷, Tuōléi ) (c. 1191, † 1232) was the fourth son of Genghis Khan. He was the son of Börte, the chief wife of Genghis Khan.

Life

Tolui was in the estate settlement (about 1218 after a dispute of the princes ) determined by the father 's counsel of his brother Ugedai Khan and Orda - Odchigin, that is the keeper of the warehouse and the tribe land in Mongolia. He took part several times on the side of his father in the campaigns against the Jin Dynasty and the kingdom of Khorezm Shah.

Genghis Khan had chosen in the choice of his successor against Toluis military capabilities and for Ugedeis political skills. 1227, after the death of his father, he took over the regency until the election of the new Great Cham Ugedai Khan 1229. Nevertheless, he is said to have competed with his brother to the dignity of the Great Khan before the election and have been doing on plays of Ugedais Guides Yelü Chucai.

In 1231/2 he put his military skills to the test when he led the troops that the defensive positions of the Jin Dynasty haunted grueling battles of the Yellow River.

According to the Secret History of the Mongols Tolui sacrificed himself in 1232 during the campaign in North China itself to protect Ogatai from impending death by disease. The disease is intended to be ceremonially transferred to him. But Chinese sources, he died after his return to Mongolia, and Dschuwaini spoke of death from alcoholism.

He was married to the Kerait Sorghaghtani Beki and father of Mangu Khan, Kublai Khan, Hulagu and Arigkbugha.

Effects

The rivalries between his sons and those of Jochi Khan on one side and those Ugedeis and Gujuks on the other hand resulted in the 1240ern at a time of stagnation in the realm of the Mongols. Later infighting between his sons Kublai Khan and Arigkbugha ( in the early 1260er years ) led to wars between the rulers and the final part of splitting the Empire.
