Tom Boonen

Tom Boonen (* October 15, 1980 in Mol ) is a Belgian racing cyclist. He is with numerous stage wins in Tours and success in one-day races as one of the best sprinters and classics riders of the 2000s. 2009 saw Boonen by a " cocaine affair" sensation.

Career

2001-2003

Boonen was in 2001 when professional team U.S. Postal Service in the year. His breakthrough came the Belgians, the equally convincing as a classic rider and sprint specialist, at Paris- Roubaix in 2002, where the 21 -year-old won the outstanding third place. Since then, Boonen was in his homeland as the designated successor to Johan Museeuw, perhaps the most successful classic hunters of the 1990s. For the 2003 season he moved to Team Quick Step - Davitamon, where he among other things, a stage of the Tour of Belgium decided for themselves.

2004

In 2004, Boonen could finally establish himself in the best in the world of cycling: In the spring, he won a number of important Flemish -day races mostly in the mass sprint, including the ProTour race Gent- Wevelgem and the semi- classic E3 Price Harelbeke and Scheldt price. In Germany Tour and the 2004 Tour de France he won two stages in the mass sprint for themselves. With a total of 20 stage wins Boonen was after winning the second most successful cyclist of the 2004 season ( behind Alessandro Petacchi with 21 wins ).

2005

On April 2, 2005 Boonen finally won the Tour of Flanders for the first time a monument of cycling, after he had solved a few kilometers from the finish of the six -man lead group. A week later, then Boonen could also secure the victory in the north of France, " Queen of the Classics " Paris -Roubaix. 2006

In 2006, Boonen repeat his success in the Tour of Flanders. In the 2006 Tour de France he won the third stage, the yellow jersey of the leader in the overall standings and wore it four days before he weakened during the 15th stage to L' Alpe d' Huez gave up due to stomach discomfort.

2007

In 2007, Tom Boonen for the season opener four stages of the Tour of Qatar and the points classification win. He also won the first two semi- classics Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne and Dwars door Vlaanderen, he also defended his title at E3 Price Harelbeke, he won for the fourth time in a row for themselves. 2008

In 2008 he celebrated his first victory in the race Paris -Roubaix. In June it was announced that Boonen was tested before the Tour of Belgium tested positive for cocaine. 2009

Boonen won for the third time, the Tour of Qatar, for the second time Kuurne -Brussels- Kuurne and for the third time Paris -Roubaix. Just days after winning the classic Paris -Roubaix Boonen was again tested positive for cocaine and was suspended on 9 May 2009 by his team Quick Step. On June 18 it was announced that in the opinion of independent experts, the Belgian Tom Boonen did not snorted the drug. A hair analysis in the University of Leuven showed that the amount was too low and Boonen had the cocaine consequently not fed through the nose. According to the experts it is merely come to the " indirect contact " with the drug.

2010

The year 2010 started very well for Tom Boonen, he could enter two stage wins at the Tour of Qatar. Also he won a stage at the Tour of Oman. His highlight in 2010 was to win a stage at Tirreno- Adriatico. At the 2010 Tour de France he could not compete due to knee problems.

2011

In 2011 he was again able to win a stage of the Tour of Qatar, it could also for the second time winning the Gent- Wevelgem race. In the 2011 Tour de France he had to give up after a fall on the 5th stage during the 7th stage.

2012

Boonen started stronger in the season than in previous years and was therefore classified as top favorite for the spring classics. This favorite role, he was impressively justice and a whole host records on and adjust. As the first driver ever he could E3 Price Harelbeke, Ghent - Wevelgem, the Tour of Flanders and Paris -Roubaix in the same season win, the latter after a 52- km-long solo ride. As the first driver, he managed to repeat the double Tour of Flanders and Paris -Roubaix. In all four races he completed after Siegen number to each record holder to or during E3 Harelbeke price he is now the sole record holder.

2013

After a botched pre-season to Boonen, Milan - Sanremo decided not to go to the end after the race weather-related interruption. At Gent- Wevelgem he came shortly before the Kemmel to case and pulled to a slight knee injury. In the Tour of Flanders Boonen crashed again and was injured, so he could not run at Paris- Roubaix.
