Tom Bradley (American politician)

Thomas J. "Tom" Bradley ( born December 29, 1917 in Calvert, Texas, † September 29, 1998 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) from 1973 to 1993 in five election periods Mayor of Los Angeles.

Bradley was the first and only black mayor in the city and the längstamtierende today. When elected in 1973, he was only the second African-American in this office in a major city in the United States after Carl Stokes in Cleveland (Ohio ). The first African-American mayor of a U.S. city ever was Robert C. Henry in Springfield (Ohio ). Before his rise to Mayor Bradley sat from 1963 to 1973 in the Los Angeles City Council.

In the years 1982 and 1986, Bradley ran unsuccessfully for the office of each Governor of California, both times beaten by the Republican George Deukmejian. An attempt to interpret the unexpected defeat in 1982 after the previous opinion polls, represents the theory of the Bradley Effect

Bradley is a star on the Walk of Fame and the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles dedicated. The Bar - Ilan University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1982.
