Tom Coughlin
Thomas Richard " Tom" Coughlin ( born August 31, 1946 in Waterloo, New York) is an American professional American football coach. Since 2004 he has been head coach of the New York Giants in the professional league NFL, with whom he was the Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI win each against the New England Patriots. Coughlin was the first head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who joined in 1995 as an expansion team of the NFL.
Coaching career
Early stations
After Coughlin had played at Syracuse University successfully as a wide receiver, he began his coaching career in 1970 as head coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology. After several years as an assistant coach at Syracuse and Boston College, he joined in 1984 as the first receiver Wide Coach to the pros in the NFL. He first worked for the Philadelphia Eagles, then for the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants. With the Giants, he was an assistant to Bill Parcells and won with the team's Super Bowl XXV against the Buffalo Bills. In 1991 he was hired as head coach at Boston College and has been extremely successful with the team.
Jacksonville Jaguars
After Coughlin success as a college coach in Boston, the newly formed Jacksonville Jaguars were in search of their first head coach noticed him and committed him for their first season in 1995. Coughlin made the Jaguars in his eight years as head coach of the most successful expansion team in the history of the NFL. The Jaguars twice reached the final of the AFC, the first time the second year of its existence. 1996 Coughlin was awarded as Coach of the Year. Coughlin reached with the Jaguars 72 wins and 64 defeats (4-4 in the playoffs ).
New York Giants
After a year off Coughlin was appointed head coach of the New York Giants in 2004. Coughlin took over a team in crisis, and had to survive a controversy surrounding the quarterback position between the veteran Kurt Warner and the first round draft pick Eli Manning in his first year. Coughlin chose from the half of the season for the rookie Manning. The Giants lost six of their next seven games and missed the playoffs, after Coughlin was strongly criticized. But that confidence in Manning paid off in 2005 when the Giants with 11 wins and only 5 losses for the first time since 2002 reached the playoffs where you lost 23-0 against the Carolina Panthers. In 2006, the Giants came into the playoffs and lost in the first round again, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The season 2007 was initially overshadowed by unrest around the resignation of Star running backs Tiki Barber. With solid performances, particularly in defense, the Giants as a wild-card team, however, could again qualify for the playoffs. After victories against the favored Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, the Giants since 2000, reached for the first time the Super Bowl, in which they until then undefeated New England Patriots defeated on February 3, 2008, 17-14. On 5 February 2012, the New York Giants were able to defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI with 21:17 again under the leadership of Coughlin.
