Tom Gilbert

Thomas Kelly Gilbert ( born January 10, 1983 in Minneapolis, Minnesota ) is an American professional ice hockey player who plays for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League on the position of the defender.

Career

After finishing school at Bloomington Jefferson High School in the State of Minnesota in the summer of 2001, Gilbert joined the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League. There he was in the 2001/ 02 season, an integral part of the team, after he had been denied his first game for the team in the preseason. After the 2001 /02 Gilbert was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth round at 129th position, but changed for the next four years, first at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, where he worked with the University team Wisconsin Badgers in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association played. During this time he was transferred from the Colorado Avalanche in March 2004 for goalkeeper Tommy Salo and a sixth- round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2005 to the Edmonton Oilers and won with the Badgers at the end of the season 2005/06 NCAA Division I Championship. Here, Gilbert scored on presentation by Joe Pavelski the crucial opening goal in the 2-0 victory over the Boston College and was on the whole game year of outstanding defender of the team.

In the summer of 2006, Gilbert joined the professional field and played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League, the former farm team the Oilers. His outstanding rookie season with 30 points in 48 games impressed the scouts of the Oilers much so that they even appointed him during the game year in the NHL squad, where the Americans further drew attention to himself with six points from twelve games. Due to its good performance in the summer training camp of the Oilers, he was the start of the 2007/08 season a regular place and played a solid year that he finished as by far the Most dangerous goal scorer rookie defender in the league. His 13 goals this season set a new franchise record for a defender rookie of the Edmonton Oilers dar. In April 2008, he agreed with the Edmonton Oilers to a contract extension for six years until the end of season 2013/14, which the Americans an annual average salary assured of around four million dollars.

On 27 February 2012 it transferred the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Nick Schultz of the Minnesota Wild. In July 2013 his contract from the wild was paid early (buy out).
