Tom Mankiewicz

Thomas Francis Mankiewicz ( born June 1, 1942 in Los Angeles, California, † July 31, 2010 ) was an American screenwriter and director.

Biography

Tom Mankiewicz was the son of film director Joseph L. Mankiewicz. His uncle Herman J. Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane ( 1941).

Tom Mankiewicz grew up in Beverly Hills and New York. He studied at the Exeter Academy and Yale University. Thanks to the connections of his family Mankiewicz tied early connections in the movie business. He spent the summer months, often on the sets of the films, where his father was working on. His career in film began in 1961 as a production assistant on the film The Comancheros with John Wayne. In 1966, he wrote screenplays.

Mankiewicz wrote the book for the based on the film Georgy Girl Georgy Musical. Through the performance of the musical in 1970, attention was drawn to Mankiewicz David Picker of United Artists. He searched his time with Albert R. Broccoli for an author to rewrite the script for Diamonds Are Forever. Since diamonds fever in Las Vegas to play, Broccoli wanted a young American as authors. They offered Mankiewicz to a contract, which ultimately led to his long-time collaboration on the James Bond film series. In Diamonds Are Forever Mankiewicz was called together with the original author Richard Maibaum as a screenwriter. The book on the next Bond Live and Let Die Mankiewicz wrote alone, before he again worked with maypole on the script for The Man with the Golden Gun. The Spy Who Loved Me, he wrote an early draft without being called ultimately uncredited. His last work on a James Bond film Moonraker was for when he wrote the draft of a possible framework for action.

In addition to his work for the James Bond film adaptations Mankiewicz worked as artistic advisor for the first two Superman movies. For Superman II, he also wrote the screenplay with, but was not mentioned in the credits.

His debut as a film director, he was in 1987 with the film Dragnet, but before that he directed some episodes of the series Hart to Hart.

In May 2012, the autobiography My Life as a Mankiewicz appeared: An Insider's Journey through Hollywood, which was created in collaboration with Robert Crane.
