Tom Murphy (U.S. politician)

Tom Murphy ( born March 10, 1924 in Bremen, Georgia, † December 17, 2007 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party.

From 1973 to 2002 he was Speaker of the House of Representatives of the State of Georgia. Before him, no one has held this position for so long.

Life

Murphy was born in Bremen, Georgia, where his father, the mayor of the town, the telegraph station of the railway operation. He graduated from high school in the village in 1941 and enrolled to study at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia one. During the Second World War he served as a member of the Navy in the Pacific theater. After the Navy, he attended the University of Georgia Law School, from which he graduated in 1960. In the same year he was elected to the agency responsible for the education commission of his place and also in the House of Representatives of Georgia. Both offices he held until the end of his activity in the school board in 1965 of alongside one another.

During the tenure of Governor Lester Maddox, he was from 1967 to 1971 elected Floor Leader of his party, comparable to a group spokesman, and 1970-1973 Speaker pro tempore in the House of Representatives. In 1973 he was elected Speaker of the House and held that post until 2002, when he lost his re-election against his Republican challenger. The election of Joe Frank Harris is returned to the Governor of the State in 1982 to his political influence. Murphy could positively influence the economic development of the state in the course of his tenure. He suffered a stroke in 2004, which affected his health greatly, and died after a long illness on December 17, 2007 in Bremen.
