Tom Sandberg

Tom Sandberg ( born August 6 1955 in Mo i Rana ) is a former Norwegian combiner and Olympic champion.

Career

Sandberg won the bronze medal in the individual Nordic Combined at the Norwegian Championships 1974 in Meldal behind Pål Arne Schjetne and Blystøl. In the same year he won the combination competition at Holmenkollen for the first time.

In the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 1974 in Autrans he won behind Konrad Winkler the silver medal in the individual competition. A year later, at the Nordic World Ski Championships Junior 1975 in Lieto he finally won the gold medal. In the same year he won at the Norwegian Championships in Rælingen he also won his first national title. It was followed until 1980, five other Norwegian league title in a row.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1976, he landed in eighth place in the individual of the combination. Four years later, at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, he improved significantly and missed fourth while only reaching a medal.

At the World Championships 1982 in Oslo, he won in a thrilling sprint finish with just 0.2 seconds ahead of Konrad Winkler. On January 7, 1984, he was in Schonach his debut in the World Cup Nordic Combined. As 15 him while already in his first World Cup succeeded in winning a World Cup point. In his first World Cup after the games he reached in Falun his first podium in second. The repetition of this success, he just missed out in fourth place in Lahti. After he won his last World Cup in Štrbské Pleso March 24, 1984, he finished the 1983/84 season was the first in the World Cup overall standings. Despite this success, he entered the following season no longer in the World Cup.

Private

Sandberg is the son of Jens Ole Sandberg and ester Marie Krokstrand. In 1981 he married Ragnhild Monsen. After the end of his active career, Sandberg operated as a sports teacher.
