Thomas James " Tom" Smith ( born October 31, 1971 in London, England ) is a former Scottish rugby union player, who was employed on the position of the pillar. He was active for the Scottish national team and played for Northampton Saints. He participated in two tours of the British and Irish Lions.

Smith ran first time in 1997 for Scotland in the match for the Calcutta Cup against England. After only three internationals he was nominated for the tour of the Lions to South Africa, was used in all three Test matches against the Springboks and was one of the guarantors for the successful outcome of the series. In 1999 he won the Scottish national team, the Five Nations, who until today last tournament success of the country. In the same year, he moved from the Glasgow Caledonians to France to CA Brive. In 2001 he left the club and went to the Northampton Saints and was considered again for the tour of the Lions. As in 1997, he played in all three test matches. He is the only Scot who was used in all six games.

Smith ended his international career in 2005 after the Six Nations. However, he was still active until the end of the 2008/09 season for the Saints. His club career ended with the final of the European Challenge Cup, won Northampton. With his age of 37 he was at the time of his career end of the oldest players in the English league.

Smith comes under new head coach of Edinburgh Rugby Rob Moffat a position as assistant coach. He will take care of the striker of the team.
