Tom Wedberg

Tom Wedberg (* November 26, 1953 in Stockholm) is a Swedish chess player and journalist.

Life

Tom Wedberg comes from a well-known Swedish family. His father Anders Wedberg (1913-1978) was Professor of Theoretical Philosophy. His grandfather Birger Wedberg (1870-1945) was Justitieråd the Supreme Court of Sweden and Honorary Member of the Svenska academies, his great-grandfather, Johan Otto Wedberg (1826-1912) was also Justitieråd and honorary member of the Kungliga och Vitterhets History Antikvitets academies, a Stockholm Academy of Sciences. Justitieråd means a judge of the Supreme Court of Sweden.

Achievements

In 1978 Tom Wedberg the title of International Master. 1981 ( shared ) and 1982 he won the policies Cup in Copenhagen. 1989/90 he won the Rilton Cup against Alexei Shirov in Stockholm. Since 1995, he has the title Grandmaster. The chess Gideon, one named after Gideon Ståhlberg award of the Swedish Chess Federation, he received in 1995 and 2001. In 2000, he won the Swedish singles champion.

In the Swedish 1st League (Elitserien), he played on the first board of the Stockholm Wasa club SK. The Swedish team championship he won in the seasons of 1973/74, 1986/87, 1987/88, 1988/89, 1989/90 and 1990 / 91st In Germany he plays for the SK Johanneum Eppendorf.

With the Swedish national team, he participated six times at the Chess Olympiad (1978, 1980, 1982, 1988, 1990 and 1992) and three times at the European Team Championship (1980, 1989 and 2001).

As a chess author, he wrote, among other articles for the magazine New in Chess.

His current Elo rating is 2495 (as of January 2010), so that he would be in eleventh place of the Swedish Elo ranking, but is considered as inactive because he has played in the last 14 months prior to this initial rating of only one -evaluated lot. His previous highest Elo rating was 2540 from April to September 2002.
