Tomago aluminium smelter

The Tomago aluminum smelter is located in Tomago, 13 kilometers west of Newcastle in New South Wales in Australia. The aluminum smelter is located approximately 13 km west of Newcastle in the Hunter region.

The cabin has a capacity of 520,000 tonnes of aluminum a year. It is operated by the Tomago Aluminium Company, a joint venture in the Rio Tinto Alcan main shareholder with 51.6 % of the shares. Furthermore, the company Gove Aluminium Finance Ltd (CMR Limited and AMP Limited) and Hydro Aluminium are involved.

The aluminum smelter began operation in 1983 with a capacity of 240,000 tonnes of aluminum annually, in 1993 the capacity was increased to 380,000 in 1998 to 530,000 tons.

Aluminum smelters are large industrial plant, which produced in the smelting electrolysis in energy-intensive aluminum from alumina. In Hall-Héroult process, pure aluminum is obtained above the melting electrolysis of alumina. In this case, aluminum is mixed with a melt temperature of 2045 ° C and cryolite, in order to lower the melting temperature. In this process, the melting temperature can be lowered to 950 ° C, allowing the electrolysis. This aluminum smelter, as all such huts 365 days in operation and can not be disabled.
