Tomas Jonsson

Tomas Jonsson ( born April 12, 1960 in Falun ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player (defender), who for the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers played from 1981 to 1989 in the National Hockey League.

Career

Jonsson began his career at second division Falun IF and moved before the season 1977/78 to MoDo Hockey in the Elitserien. A year later, at the NHL Entry Draft in 1979, he was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round to 25th place. Two years later he was in the season 1981/82 his debut for the Islanders and won with the team the championship trophy of the NHL, the Stanley Cup. He won the Stanley Cup as the third European. In the following season with the Islanders, he succeeded in title defense.

Jonsson played until 1989 for the Islanders, who then charges him to the Edmonton Oilers. However, he did not stay long at the Oilers, but returned to Europe to play until 1998 for Leksand IF.

Internationally

Jonsson began early in his career, to represent his country at the World Championships and was among other 1991 Ice Hockey World Championship. One of the highlights of his career was winning the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games 1994. By winning this medal, he was accepted Gold Club in the prestigious Triple, the only player whose principal Stanley Cup, won the world title and an Olympic gold medal.
