Tomas Riad

Staffan Tomas Riad (* November 15, 1959 in Uppsala ) is a Swedish linguist. He is Professor of Nordic Languages ​​at Stockholm University and since 2011 a member of Svenska academies. He went there to the succession of the author Birgitta Defiantly on chair number six.

Life

Riad was born in Uppsala, the son of the architect Hosni Riyadh and the lecturer Eva Riad, but spent his first five years in Egypt, the homeland of his father. This belonged to the Coptic Christians who were suffering more and more from the policies of Nasser. The family then decided to move to Uppsala, his mother's hometown. Riad put the Abitur in 1978 and studied for a year at the Academy of Music Royal College of Music in London violin. Back in Sweden, he completed his military service as a radio operator and then began studying at the University of Uppsala in the subjects of English, Irish and Swedish. In 1983 he moved to the University of Stockholm and received from 1985 to 1986 a PhD position at Brandeis University in the United States. He worked there with psychology and linguistics and came up with Alan Prince in contact, which sparked his interest in phonology. Riyadh in 1992 received his doctorate. His dissertation was titled Structures in Germanic Prosody - A diachronic study with special reference to the Nordic languages ​​. Through them he was given the opportunity to research at Stanford University in the United States. In a later stage of the research project, he managed through in-depth analysis of ancient versification August Strindberg, in the article Accents left and right (2009) to show how the assimilation of classical prosody in Swedish working.

The mid-1990s he returned to the University of Stockholm and worked as a research assistant. His interests focus was now on special Norwegian and Swedish tones accents. In his article published in 1998, The Origin of Scandinavian tone accents he put forward the hypothesis of linguistic history, emerged as the tonal accents. He was also interested in how the Danish could develop in an entirely different direction. In the article, The origin of Danish stod (2000), this phenomenon is discussed in detail. In his later researches viewed Riad interested how Sprachrhytmus and melody affect the word formation, which can be shown in particular in the formation of nicknames.
