Tomáš Šmíd

Tomáš Šmíd ( born May 20, 1956 in Plzeň) is a former Czechoslovak tennis player.

The doubles specialist won 55 doubles titles in his career and in 1984 performed as the No. 1 doubles world ranking. But even in single Šmíd was successful. Among his nine victories in tournaments is one of victory in 1979 at the Mercedes Cup at Stuttgart Weißenhof and success in the international Bavarian Championships in Munich in 1983. His best finish in the world rankings was the 11th Place (1984 )

Šmíd was 1991-1992 coach of Boris Becker.

Davis Cup

Šmíd occurred 67 times in the former Czechoslovakia in the Davis Cup. He won 22 of 37 singles matches and 20 of 30 dual matches.

His biggest success was the participation in the Davis Cup overall victory of Czechoslovakia in 1980. In the final, Italy beat Czechoslovakia 4-1. Šmíd won his first singles match against Adriano Panatta and his double on the side of Ivan Lendl against Paolo Bertolucci / Adriano Panatta and lost the match against Corrado Barazutti. Lendl won both of his singles matches.
