Tomato (Firmware)

Tomato is an alternative firmware for several wireless routers, which are based on the Broadcom chipset. Tomato is a modification or extension of the original firmware from Linksys. To compile Tomato for Tomato available on the website source code, the source code of the Linksys firmware is also required.

Tomato can be installed in place of the pre-installed firmware from the manufacturer. It is a lean Linux distribution, which offers additional features from the manufacturer's firmware and can be adjusted flexibly. Provided are, among other things, a secure shell access ( BusyBox, Dropbear ), an easy to use graphical user interface with the SVG shown statistics IPP2P, Wake On LAN, quality of service, different wireless modes, for example, bridging, the Wireless Distribution system and a CIFS client. Unlike many original firmwares most settings from Tomato be taken without rebooting.

Since Version 1.24 Tomato also supports NAT Port Mapping Protocol.

  • Netgear WNR3500L

Similar alternatives are OpenWrt firmware, among other things, FreeWRT and DD -WRT.
