Tomlinson Holman

Tomlinson Holman is an American sound engineer and co-founder of THX, a seal of quality for high-quality sound reproduction in cinemas and in home theater systems.

THX

As an employee of George Lucas studio Sprocket Systems Holman developed in 1982 a standard system that would unify the acoustics of the recording studio to the movie theater to align the projection quality in the sound recording studio in public cinemas. Although the sound in the recording studio was well mixed, the audience could realize in many movie theaters due to poor technical and room acoustics on the good sound only slightly. At Holman standardization was not only the technology used, but also the nature of the premises where the sound was played.

On this basis, Holman developed in collaboration with staff from Sprocket Systems, an array of speakers that was integrated into the specific acoustics of the synchronous studios of Sprocket system. This so-called THX sound system could adapt in almost any cinema to the properties and construction. For a list of criteria was drawn up, which had to adhere to a professional theater in order to get the so-called THX license.

As a result, George Lucas founded 1983, THX Ltd.. , Which has since been awarded this seal of quality cinema and now also to home cinema systems.

In 2007 he received the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award.

Audyssey

In 2002, Tomlinson Holman joined forces with Sunil Bharitkar and Philip Hilmes the Audyssey Laboratories Inc., whose developments are nowadays found in many home theater amplifiers.
