Tommaso Grossi

Tommaso Grossi ( born January 20, 1791 in Bellano, Lecco province, † December 10, 1853 in Milan ) was an Italian poet.

Tommaso Grossi studied law at Pavia and went to Milan in 1810, where he first made ​​his attention by a program written in the Milanese dialect political- satirical poem against the new Austrian rule.

Later, he had a novel in verse: La fuggitiva (1817 ), a tragic love episode in the French wars, and the seal Ildegonda (1820 ) followed, with which he went to the field of medieval life, which the then emerging in Italy Romantic School as the heyday of the Christian era and as a treasure trove of the most genuine poetic substances celebrated.

The poem won especially the female audience for itself by touching the events and underwent numerous editions. 1826 G. published an epic poem: I Lombardi alla prima crociata ( 15 songs ) in which he wanted the pagan colored epic of Torquato Tasso face a truly Catholic Crusaders seal; but though the work appeared particularly valuable in relation to the language and operated components, but it provided no hinlängliches interest of the action and the characteristics.

Inspired by the well-known major work Alessandro Manzoni, to Grossi now cast on the historical novel and delivered his Marco Visconti (1834; German Fink, Schaffhausen 1859), its importance but still Sposi far more than the Promessi Manzoni by the name of a historical study is exhausted.
