Short Biography

A noble family entstammend, Tommaso Landolfi spent his childhood and youth alternately in Pico Farnese, Rome and Florence, where he obtained his degree in 1932 with a thesis on the Russian writer Anna Akhmatova. His profound knowledge of Russian, French and German literature is reflected in a highly productive work as a translator, which is maintained Landolfi time of his life. In Florence, where he intellectuals in the famous literary café " Le Rosse Giubbe " joins, he works for several literary magazines (among other Letteratura and Campo di Marte ) before 1937 his first collection of short stories published under the title Dialogo dei Massimi sistemi. This is followed by further volumes of stories ( Il mar delle blatte e altre storie, 1939 La Spada, 1942) and novels (La pietra lunar Scene della vita di provincia, 1939. Le due zittelle, 1946), in which always the fantastic and grotesque in center of the narrative is. This voltage will remain characteristic of Landolfis work and the author in literary criticism - fit into a number of narrators that have established a possible " Italian Surrealism " ( Buzzati, Savinio, Delfini ) - probably not quite right.

Tommaso Landolfi is one of the most important and original Italian authors of the 20th century, although he did not achieve great popularity with his work.

1996 was launched by the Centro Studi Landolfiani Landolfis daughter.
