Ton Koopman

Ton Koopman ( born October 2, 1944 in Zwolle / Netherlands) is a Dutch conductor, organist and harpsichordist.

Life and work

Koopman studied musicology in Amsterdam. In 1979 he founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, the 1992 Amsterdam Baroque Choir and thus the ensemble Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir. He mainly deals with the music of the Baroque and is a representative of historical performance practice. Among other things, he took between 1994 and 2004 on all cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach. In this project acted as soloists, among others Lisa Larsson, Sibylla Rubens, Barbara Schlick and Caroline Stam (soprano), Michael Chance, Bernhard Landauer, Elisabeth von Magnus, Annette Markert, and Andreas Scholl ( alto), Paul Agnew, Lothar Odinius and Christoph Prégardien ( tenor) and Klaus Mertens ( bass).

Koopman came as guest conductor known orchestras in Europe, North America and Japan in appearance. Since 2004 he is Professor of Musicology at the University of Leiden. In 2005 he began the project " Dieterich Buxtehude - Opera Omnia ", a recording of the complete works of Dieterich Buxtehude. He was elected in 2004 as President of the " International Dieterich Buxtehude Society ".

Awards

In 2012, received the Buxtehude Koopman Prize of the city of Lübeck.
