History

Various excavations and discoveries of rock art, among other things occupy a prehistoric settlement of the district. Since the Romans, who ruled here since the 2nd century BC, the most important local village was known as Ballistarii. Some portions of the running here Roman road are still preserved. The circle was as Besteiros independently before the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1139 and belonged to the circle Tondela Besteiros.

King Manuel I gave Besteiros 1515 city rights. 1836 moved the seat and the name of the circle to Tondela. 1987 Tondela became a town.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the district include, inter alia, archaeological excavations and archaeological sites, historic public buildings, stone fountains, Roman and later bridges, mansions, and a variety of religious buildings. The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.

Sports

The football club CD Tondela rose in 2013 for the first time on the Portuguese Second League. In the district there are a number of other sports clubs, including the Clube Atlético de Molelos and Sporting Clube de Nandufe, founded in 1925, both of which are known for their football departments.

Tondela is in the Dão wine region, especially red wines are produced in a circle.
