Tondo (art)

A tondo (plural: Tondi ) or round image is a circular image work. It can be designed as a painting or relief. The word is derived from the Italian Rotondo and of which an abbreviated form.

Tondi already existed in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. In the Italian art of the 15th and 16th century, this special form was popular. The Tondo is also often rezipiertes design element in architecture from antiquity to the historicism. It is often used on the gable sides under the roof.
