Tonga Island Marine Reserve

The Iceland Tonga Marine Reserve is a marine reserve in the north of the South Island of New Zealand, which adjoins the Abel Tasman National Park. It was founded in 1993 as the third marine reserve in New Zealand.

To reserve a part of an area of 1835 hectares, this includes the sea within a radius of one nautical mile to the Tonga Iceland and coastal areas between Awaroe Head and the headland between the bark and the Mosquito Bay.

On the island of Tonga Iceland is a seal colony. Since fishing has been banned, many fish and crustaceans, dolphins and seabirds are found in the reserve. The reserve is a popular diving area and is also used for sea kayaking.
