Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing ( German about: Alpine Tongariro Crossing; until 2007: Tongariro Crossing ) is a hiking trail in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. It is 19.4 km long in one direction and can be run in one day. In the summer months daily walk more than 700 tourists in this way; so is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing one of the most popular trails in New Zealand.

Route description

The starting point is the Mangatepopo Valley only slightly increases usually in the first 1100 m altitude up to the Soda Springs along the river. Shortly after the parking lot is allowed to be the Magatepopo hat left. On the right you can see the inviting climbing walls of Pukikaikiore. Between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, there is a steep rise, the so-called Devil 's Staircase (staircase of the devil ), the 1600m high saddle, and from there on the south crater to the highest point of the trail, the 1886 m high and still active Red Crater. Behind the Emerald Lakes with its sulfurous shore edges the route falls along the Te - wai -o -te- whakaiata Rangihiroa ( Blue Lake ) from the Ketetahi hut. Here the trail crosses private land with hot springs before going down winds up on the Ketetahi Car Park situated at 800 m altitude in the forest. Or the 1967 m high Tongariro ( Crater from the Red marked; approximately two periods ); On the route Seitenabstecher to the peaks of 2291 m high Mount Ngauruhoe are also (about three periods unmarked from the south crater ) is possible. In addition, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can largely be run as a section within the Tongariro Northern Circuit - a total of nine Great Walks of New Zealand.

Due to its popularity and the risk of car risers can arrive by public transport to the two parking spaces. Hikers should be prepared for the high-alpine conditions extremely changeable without vegetation and bring their own drinking water for the day's hike. Guided walking tours are available.
