Tongerlo Abbey

The Tongerlo Abbey is an abbey of Premonstratensian or Norbertine Order in Westerlo near Antwerp in Belgium.

History

The abbey was founded in 1130 by Giselbert of Turnhout, who joined her as a lay brother. The first canons came from the Abbey of St. Michael from Antwerp, which itself had been founded only a few years before.

Today includes 54 Premonstratensian Canons Abbey, dedicated to, among others, the pastoral care in the parishes of the environment. A da Vinci Museum contains a copy of Leonardo's "Last Supper" from the 16th century, which contains details that are no longer visible on the original painting.

The Werenfried van Straaten as " Bacon Priest " became known was a member of the Abbey Tongerlo.
