Tony Award for Best Original Score

With the Tony Award for Best Original Music (Tony Award for Best Original Score ), the composer and lyricist of musicals will be honored. The English term score ( in the narrow sense score, in a broader sense music in general) here refers therefore both the purely tonal work as well as on the set texts.

Nominierbar are only works that were written specifically for the musical theater. Music that was not written for the stage, as well as compilations of songs that previously found already use in any other form, are therefore excluded from the nomination.

This category was subjected to smaller changes in the course of time. So only the composer was awarded in 1947, 1950, 1951 and 1962. In all other years, composer and lyricist were always jointly honored ( 1971 only one prize each was separately awarded to the artist).
