Tony Award

The Tony Awards, actually the Antoinette Perry Award is an annual award since 1947, American theater and musical price is the most important American theater award. He is therefore regarded as equivalent to the Oscar ( for movies ), the Grammy (for music ) and Emmy (for television ). The distinctive trophy with the silver medal there since 1949. Named after Antoinette Perry For the price, all plays and musicals that were played during the year on Broadway, will be nominated.

History

The Tony Award is awarded by about 700 members who are recruited from the entertainment industry and the press. 1947, the price of the American Theatre Wing ( the American theater union ) was founded. The first awards ceremony took place on April 6, 1947 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Since 1967, the award of U.S. television is broadcast live. To be audience appeal, since songs and scenes from the nominated musicals and plays are performed live or presented by means of video playback.

Rules

Rules for a "new" play or musical

At the Tony Awards a play or musical is considered "new " if it is so far not a Broadway production it was still part of the "historical or general repertoire ". This phrase has always taken care of controversy, as therefore often plays or musicals could not be nominated in the categories that are open only new works (eg, Best Play, Best Musical, Best Musical Libretto ). Musicals coming from the off-Broadway or the West End to Broadway or movie based on templates that are counted as "new".

Season permission

To be nominated for the Tony Award to a show must have had within a predetermined time period premiere. For example, the deadline for nominations for the season 2008/2009 der 30 April 2009. All pieces before premiere, this year are included as from 1 May 2009, the piece of the next season is allocated, so it can be considered until the next awards ceremony.

"Broadway Theater"

As a "Broadway theater " a theater with more than 500 seats and some other criteria is defined. Since there are no real geographical map, the Tony Awards committee is responsible to determine which applies New York theater as " Broadway theater ". The list of 2007/ 08 contains only theater in the vicinity of Times Square and the Theater at Lincoln Center.

Criticism

While many visitors view the Tony Award for Theatre Academy and as a quality criterion, the theater press and criticism is more likely not view these as the Tony Award only pieces taken into account, which will be played in one of the 39 " Broadway theater ". Pieces and performances by the actors from the "Off -Broadway " or " Off-Off -Broadway " are not included in the selection.
