Tony Coelho

Anthony Lee "Tony" Coelho ( born June 15, 1942 in Los Banos, California) is an American politician. Between 1979 and 1989 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Tony Coelho attended the public schools in Dos Palos and then studied until 1964 at Loyola University in Los Angeles. Between 1965 and 1978 he was on the staff of Congressman Bernice F. Sisk. During this time he worked for various congressional committees in an advisory and administrative function. Politically, Coelho joined the Democratic Party. Between 1976 and 1988 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions relevant. He also participated in several regional party days of the Democrats in California.

In the congressional elections of 1978, Coelho was in the 15th electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Bernice Sisk on January 3, 1979. After five elections he could remain until his resignation on 15 June 1989 at the Congress. He campaigned for the disabled. He was co-founder of a law to improve the situation of people with disabilities (American with Disabilities Act ). His resignation came after he had made negative headlines in the press, who took him with questionable financial transactions, private connection. It never came to an indictment or conviction.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Coelho worked as a department director of an investment company. In 1992 he was involved in the House banking scandal. Between 1994 and 2000 he was Chairman of the Committee präsidentialen for disabled people in the workplace ( President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities ). Coelho was also chairman of the Epilepsy Foundation, of which he is a member today.
