Tony Cragg

Tony Cragg, actually Anthony Douglas Cragg ( born April 9, 1949 in Liverpool) is an English visual artist. By the end of July 2013 Cragg was rector of the Dusseldorf Art Academy.

Life

Tony Cragg, the son of a pilot and electrical engineer in the aerospace industry, worked after high school, first as an intern at a biochemical research company, before turning to art. He took up his studies at the Gloucestershire College of Art and Design, then attended the painting class of the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to the Royal College of Art in London in 1973.

During his studies, Tony Cragg's interest from the Picturesque to the plastic moved, so he stretched nets of knotted cords about everyday objects. His acquaintance with conceptual artist Richard Long influenced his work in this period. On his " explorations " by the great outdoors, landfills collected Tony Cragg objects as material and as inspiration for new work served him: Civilization Debris hits natural materials.

In 1976 he took up a teaching post at the Ecole des Beaux -Arts in Metz. A year later he moved to Wuppertal, which is his residence today. He lived in seclusion for two years to "Newton 's New Tones Stones, " in 1979 with the work - to report back on the art scene - a mosaic of colorful, color- ordered and spread on the bottom plastic pieces.

In the 80s, he was present at many important international exhibitions. For example, at the documenta 7 and 8 in Kassel and at five biennials in Venice, Sao Paulo and Sydney. Mid-1980s was marked again a turning point in Tony Cragg's work from: Objects age of plastic are replaced by expansive bronze sculptures. In 1988 he was awarded the Turner Prize. Since the late 1980s, is dedicated to Tony Cragg also the drawing.

From 1979 he taught at the Dusseldorf Art Academy, since 1988 as a professor, to begin in 2001 as professor of sculpture at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Since 1994 he is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and since 2002 member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In addition, he was raised in the same year in the state of a Commander of the British Empire ( CBE). Having previously served as vice-rector of the Dusseldorf Art Academy, since 2009 he is the successor of Professor Markus Liipertz rector. On August 1, 2013, he handed over the office to Rita McBride.

2009 Anthony Cragg was elected to the North Rhine- Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Sculpture Park Forest Peace in Wuppertal

2006 bought by the sculptor in Wuppertal, a 15 acre overgrown park with protected villa forest peace, the former home of Kurt Herberts to build the sculpture park forest peace here. To be able to devote to the project, he gave up his professorship at the University of Arts in Berlin ( University of Arts ) and moved to the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In September 2008, the sculpture park was opened. It displays works by Tony Cragg and organized exhibitions with other international sculptors.

Craggs first created for outdoor work was the plastic " spine ". It is part of the Sculpture Collection Viersen and is since 1996 in addition to the district administration Viersen.
