Tony Judt

Tony Judt Robert ( born January 2, 1948 in London, † August 6, 2010 in New York ) was a British historian, who has been dealing with the history of Europe since the end of the 19th century. He was director since 1995 and founder of the Remarque Institute at New York University. Known to a wider public was Judt through his book The history of Europe from 1945 to the present ( 2005). Judt was, though himself a Jew, a sharp critic of Israel and the Middle East policy of the United States.

Career

Judt was educated at the University of Cambridge. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and 1972, the Ph.D. in History. In 1966 he worked on a kibbutz in Mahanaim and during the Six Day War in 1967 as a driver and translator for the Israeli army. His hitherto pro-Zionist attitude was shaken but getting stronger. Judt joined in 2003 by a plea for a binational Israeli- Palestinian state ( state solution ) for the territory of Palestine generated. His changed attitude on this issue led to a lecture by him was canceled under pressure from the Anti-Defamation League and we had to request for him Saalschutz.

Judt had a pan-European perspective, and saw Europe as belonging together. He criticized parts of the 68ers, as they confusing array himself in his view, in theories, thereby leaving a narrowed understanding. He also opposed former companions, who now supported the Bush administration and his view to " left Hawks" (English: "liberal hawks ") and " useful idiots " have become. Also critical consideration Judt Europe, the recent development: the West had forgotten how a common moral language with which solidarity could justify. During his two final years he suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

1996 Judt was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2007 Fellow of the British Academy. 2006 Judt was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize for the Political Book, 2007 with the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize and the Hannah Arendt Prize ( as " a person who is in the public debate on Europe and the West ... committed " ) awarded.
