Tony Kofi

Tony Kofi (born 1966 in Nottingham ) is a British jazz musician ( alto, baritone and soprano saxophone, flute)

Life and work

Kofi grew up as the son of Ghanaian migrants in England and taught himself saxophone. From 1988-990, he studied at the Berklee College of Music. In 1991 he returned to Britain, where he first played with the Jazz Warriors and Gary Crosby's Nu- troup. He also appeared with Julian Argüelles, Claude depa, Billy Higgins, Andrew Hill, Courtney Pine, Tim Richards or Us3. Then he led, together with Byron Wallen band projects. In the Monk Liberation band he dedicated to the legacy of Thelonious Monk. to his regular quartet, which is sometimes reinforced by Orphy Robinson, include pianist Jonathan Gee, bassist Ben Hazleton and Winston Clifford drums. He also led the ten-member Afro Jazz Family and belonged to Lucky Rankus African All Stars. His album Monk: All Is Know in 2005 for the BBC Jazz Awards as " Jazz Album of the Year" nomination.
