Tony Lazzeri

Anthony Michael "Tony" Lazzeri (December 6, 1903 in San Francisco, California; † August 6, 1946 ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball. His nickname was Poosh.

Biography

Tony Lazzeri was a member of Murderers Row, the championship team of the New York Yankees 1927th five times won the second baseman with his Yankees World Series, seven times he hit more than 100 RBIs and had five seasons with at least 18 home runs. Although he stood in the shadow of Yankees legends like Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, he was the first Italian-American superstar in baseball.

After six titles in the American League and five hits in the World Series he left after the 1937 season, the Yankees and moved to the Chicago Cubs in the National League. With the Cubs, he won the title in the National League, but lost to the Yankees in the World Series with 0:4. In 1939 he was still playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants.

His best days as a player had Lazzeri on May 24, 1936. On this day he was the first to hit two grand slam home runs in one day and 11 RBIs in a game set a record which still apply today for the American League.

45 years after his death, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
