Tony Orlando and Dawn

Dawn was an American pop trio with great success in the first half of the 1970s.

Band History

Dawn was founded in 1970 in New York City with Tony Orlando ( born April 3, 1944 as Michael Anthony Orlando Cassivitis ) as lead singer. Orlando, who had had three Top 100 hits in the early 1960s and retired from the music business, was by Hank Medress, member of the band The Tokens and Dave Appell, the leader of the band The Applejacks, persuaded to take a title. The song " Candida " was written by Toni Wine and Irwin Levine. In May 1970, the title with Orlando as the lead singer and Ellie Greenwich, Toni Wine, Jay Siegel and Robin Green was included as background vocalists. The end of July appeared " Candida " for the first time in the U.S. singles charts, reaching number three and remained in the charts for 18 weeks.

The following single " Knock Three Times " reached the top spot in the singles chart on 23 January 1971, three weeks was able to hold in the first place. The single has sold over six million copies. In the UK, the title also reached the top spot in the Federal Republic of Germany 2nd place

Since the group Dawn was so far only been a studio group, but now tours and public appearances were demanded by the record company, the group regrouped and Orlando formed, along with the studio singers Telma Hopkins ( born October 28, 1948) and Joyce Vincent ( born December 14, 1946) from the beginning of 1971, the vocal trio Dawn. In October 1971, the group renamed itself "Dawn featuring Tony Orlando " and in November 1973 she called themselves " Tony Orlando & Dawn ".

After titles in 1972 produced "What Are You Doing Sunday", "Runaway / Happy Together ", " Vaya Con Dios " and " You're A Lady" no hits were, Dawn succeeded in early 1973, another number one hit, " Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree ".

All their records were produced by Hank Medress and Dave appeal. The vocal trio continued until 1977.
