Tony Sly

Anthony J. Sly (born 4 November 1970 at Mountain View, California, † 31 July 2012) was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and frontman of the punk band No Use for a Name. In addition, he has published four acoustic albums, two as a solo project and two projects as a split with Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape.

Career

Tony Sly joined No Use for a Name in 1989 at the age of 18 years. He was the singer and lead guitarist. The first album Incognito was released in 1990 on the label New Red Archives and embodied a hard, yet melodic hardcore punk sound. The second album Do not Miss the Train was published in 1992.

This was followed by seven more studio albums that accompanied Sly as the frontman of No Use For A Name. Last The Feel Good Record of the Year was published in 2008. Since the year 2010, there was information that the band is working hard on a new album.

Away from No Use For A Name Sly published in 2004 jointly a split with Joey Cape of Lagwagon, wherein each of the two musicians grossed songs of each band. In addition, each artist contributed a new song on the album with.

Beginning of 2010, published his first real solo album Sly 12 Song Program, whose origin dates back to 2008, when he announced to implement his own solo project. In October 2011, followed by his second solo album, Sad Bear, the work presented back for its origin Sly on the new album with his band.

Also from 2011 Tony Sly was part of the side project Scorpios, with whom he collaborated again with Joey Cape ( Lagwagon ) and Jon Snodgrass (Drag the River ) and Brian Wahlstrom.

Sly's last release was Acoustic Vol 2, again a split with Joey Cape, which appeared in June 2012 on Fat Wreck Chords and again contains twelve songs, of which each of the two artists has recorded six.

August 1, 2012 announced his label Fat Wreck Chords that Tony Sly died the day before. On August 7, the label released a statement in which it is said Sly was " peacefully died in his sleep ." His last show took place 29 July 2012 together with Joey Cape in Gainesville, Florida. His last show with No Use for a Name was on the D -Toxic Rockfest in Montebello, Quebec, on 15 June 2012.

Tony Sly is survived by his wife Brigitte and the two common daughters Fiona (2004) and Keira (2008). As part of his work he has two daughters, each dedicated to a song, For Fiona No Use For A Name 2005 and Keira on his solo album 12 Song Program 2010.

On 29 October 2013, the album The Songs of Tony Sly appeared: a Tribute to the various artists and bands such as Rise Against, Bad Religion, Alkaline Trio, Yellowcard, Snuff and Karina DeNike songs by Tony Sly reinterpret. The proceeds of the sale of the album benefit the Tony Sly Memorial Fund benefit.
